Trust Based Relational Intervention

What is TBRI ?

Trust-Based Relational Intervention® (TBRI®) is an attachment-based, trauma-informed approach designed to meet the complex needs of vulnerable children. It is rooted in research and focuses on connecting, empowering, and correcting strategies to help children build trust and develop healthy relationships.

  • TBRI® is specifically designed for children who have experienced early trauma, abuse, neglect, or other forms of adversity. It is particularly effective for adoptive and foster families, educators, social workers, therapists, churches, and other professionals working with at-risk youth.

  • TBRI® is built on three core principles. These principles work together to create a safe and structured environment where children can heal and thrive.

    • Connecting: Establishing trust and safety through meaningful relationships and engagement.

    • Empowering: Addressing physical and emotional needs to help children regulate their responses and behaviors.

    • Correcting: Teaching appropriate behaviors through proactive and responsive strategies that focus on connection rather than punishment.

    • Builds secure attachments between caregivers and children

    • Helps children regulate emotions and behaviors

    • Reduces aggression and meltdowns

    • Encourages positive social skills and relationships

    • Provides caregivers with tools to respond effectively to trauma-related behaviors

    • Supports long-term healing and resilience
